UNICEF’s Wheels For Change Sportive – 24th May 2014

UNICEF, the charitable branch of the United Nations that aims to improve the lives of children across the globe and Barclays, sponsors of the Premier League football here in the UK are coming together with the aim of raising ยฃ500,000 to help young people ‘turn their business dreams into reality‘… Over to you Sir Chris:

Almost a quarter of the worldโ€™s young people are unemployed and the problem is getting worse. The money you raise will provide start-up funding to help disadvantaged young people get small businesses off the ground and on the move, as well as helping them to develop the skills and business acumen they need to fulfil their potential. You will help young people to build a brighter future for themselves and their communities.” (UNICEF Wheels for Change website)

Basically, UNICEF are asking people to sign up to one of seven 100km sportives that start and finish at seven Premier League grounds. Here’s a map of them:Screen Shot 2014-02-20 at 09.51.45

I suppose if you are not a fan of any of the seven teams you’ll just have to bury your rivalries for just one day in late May (by which time the football season will have finished anyway and we will all be united as one nation in anticipation of getting knocked out of the World Cup in the group stages…). Alternatively you could go to Singapore where there is an eighth event taking place! They are looking for 10,000 cyclists and you could be one of them… More details on the Wheels for Change website.

  1. Perhaps after that they’d like to do something to help those of us who became an “austerity measure” at 50.

What do you think?
