The map is wrong. It shows Harris as a separate island to Lewis, which it isn’t. What appears to be an island is actually a peninsula connected to the rest of the island by an isthmus. Across the isthmus is still Harris. In fact the peninsula constitutes slightly less than half of Harris. The division only came about to distinguish the land owned by two branches of the Clan MacLeod and most people on H&L no longer know where the boundary lies save that approximately the Northern two-thirds are Lewis and the bottom third is Harris. Mind how you go by Clisham. It’s a steep climb notorious for very strong, gusting winds, strong enough to be dangerous – I know from personal experience.
Thanks Pagan. Yes, I know Lewis & Harris are connected but for the purposes of my video and with a nod to the marketing slogan of the Outer Hebrides tourist authority: “185 miles, 10 islands, 6 causeways, 2 ferries” I have ten islands, not nine. I’ll look out for the hill. 😊🚴♂️🏴
