The Cycle Touring Photograph of the Year 2019: The Winners Are…

The competition closed at midnight on February 28th and the judges have been locked away in a secret location to deliberate. OK, that’s not quite true. The judges – Laura and Tim Moss, round-the-world cyclists and organisers of The Cycle Touring Festival – probably did it on their sofa over a cup of tea. They have, however, made their decision and the winners are…

FIRST PLACE: LIZA S, ICELAND, JULY 2018

Lisa S - Iceland

The judges: “This photograph really stood out.ย  The best cycle touring photographs are those which give a sense of place, and it did just that.ย  It effectively evokes the bleak, lunar landscape for which Iceland is famous.ย  Including the road also gives a sense of the journey which the cyclist is on, leading the eye deeper into the landscape.”ย

SECOND PLACE: ALAN BRENTON, ARGYLL, OCTOBER 2018

Alan Brenton1

The judges: “This is a beautiful shot, with vibrant colours.ย  It suggests the rider is facing a variety of weather conditions, which is something all cycle tourists will be familiar with.”

THIRD PLACE: BRENDA, GERMANY, SUMMER 2018

Brenda 1

The judges: “This photo suggests a story, which is why it has been chosen.ย  The cyclist in the photo looks weary and ready for the rest stop – something we can all relate to.ย  It is also a lovely natural shot, entirely un-staged and catching the moment.”

Congratulations to all three winners. They will soon be receiving their signed copies of the ‘…on a Bike Called Reggie‘ books. Thanks also to everyone who submitted their photographs for the competition. Sit back with your own cup of tea, coffee, wine or whatever and enjoy this carousel celebration of cycle touring and photography… The competition will return in 2020 so get snapping!
