I woke up at the ridiculously early hour of 5am this morning (it’s the time I generally wake up during the week…), switched on the radio but rapidly switched it off again after listening to the news bulletin. Instead, I came to sit at the computer and typed ‘cycling’ into the seach function on BBC Sounds. Of the many suggestions in the list (some of which had nothing to do with cycling – recycling etc…), one stuck out. It was also the first one on the list as it had only been published on June 20th:

Radio 6 Music is for the cool kids. I’m not one of them and have never listened to the station but, 70 minutes in, I’m beginning to see (hear?) the error of my ways.
Here is the playlist:

I’m currently at number 20 – Rozi Plain’s Painted The Room (which this uncool kid has never heard of…) – and looking forward to Yves Montand at number 22 (a song that I can’t hum but will probably recognise when it starts). Most of the songs have a cycling connection, perhaps all of them do but, well, not being one of the cool kids… I’m thoroughly enjoying this Sunday morning cycling-themed trawl through the 6 Music record library. Thank-you Gideon Coe (whoever you happen to be). If you want to listen yourself, here is the link. It says it’s available for another 6 days so be quick!
Typing ‘cycling’ into BBC Sounds inspired me to type ‘cycle touring’ into the BBC website to see if I could find anyone interesting to interview for The Cycling Europe Podcast… and I think I may have found someone. [Yves Montand has just started and yes, of course I recognise this!] I’ve sent the person concerned (the person on the BBC website not Yves Montand…) a message via Instagram inviting them to take part. They live not too far from me here in the north of England (although it would require a ferry ride) and it got me thinking…
I have yet to renew my passport. It ran out in May and, well, as I have no imminent plans to travel abroad I am lacking in motivation to fork out the required £88.50 to get a new one. I will do so at some point over the summer as, for someone who runs a website called CyclingEurope.org and makes a podcast called The Cycling Europe Podcast, not having a valid passport does seem rather short-sighted. But back to my point. Wherever I go this summer, it will have to be within the UK. As a teacher, I have six weeks of time to fill and currently have very few plans. Shetland is still a possibility (listen to the most recent episode of The Cycling Europe Podcast) but that will be very dependant upon the weather. July 2024 in Yorkshire is turning out to be more like February in Yorkshire. I even had the fire on one evening this week. But how about finding a few people to interview for the podcast and, instead of interviewing them online, I cycle off (assisted by a few trains no doubt) to interview them in person? That would not only provide me with plenty of material for the podcast it would also give me a very good excuse to get out on the bike and do some travelling!
Have you got an interesting cycling-themed story to tell? Would you mind me turning up on your doorstep and grilling you about it for a future epsiode of The Cycling Europe Podcast. Get in touch!
