The Numbers Behind The 2026 Road World Championships In Montréal

The UCI Road World Championships return to Montreal in September, 52 years after Eddy Merckx won the rainbow jersey on the city’s Mount Royal circuit. Nearly 1,000 riders are expected to compete across the elite, under-23 and junior categories during eight days of racing. Thirteen routes have been prepared for the championships, which take place between 20 and 27 September. The programme includes individual time trials, road races and the mixed team relay. The elite men’s road race closes the event on the final Sunday.

The UCI Road World Championships return to Canada between 20 and 27 September, bringing around 1,000 riders to Montréal for eight days of time trials, road races and the mixed team relay. This will be the first Road World Championships held in Canada since Hamilton hosted the event in 2003. Montréal has an even longer connection with the competition. In 1974, it became the first city outside Europe to stage the championships.The elite men’s road race on 27 September will cover 273.7 kilometres and include 3,803 metres of climbing. Those figures point towards a selective contest suited to strong Classics riders rather than pure sprinters.

As I sit here at home on a Sunday evening contemplating the return to work in the morning (albeit with a potential ‘snow day’ to look forward to on Tuesday…) waiting for the gas engineer to arrive to service the boiler (yes, he works on Sundays!), this film from Markus Stitz has, for ten minutes, transported me to summer on the opposite side of the Atlantic; Canada to be precise.
