How to Handle Your First Tough Mudder

Are you preparing to take part in your first Tough Mudder event? Firstly, congratulations on your bravery! Secondly, youโ€™ve got a lot of work ahead of you. Known as one of the most extreme obstacle event series in the world, Tough Mudder tests your strength, endurance, and mental grit. It also forces you to get down and dirty in the mud! Practice high-intensity interval training

Whether you have chosen to take part in the 5km, 10km, or epic 15km course, you need to be physically strong and fit to have any chance of finishing Tough Mudder. As a sporting event that requires you to go hard and then rest in between obstacles, high-intensity interval training is exactly what you should be doing to get your body ready.

There are lots of different exercises that you can do during this type of training, but people tend to combine either sprinting or cycling with bodyweight exercises.

Get mentally prepared

Even with the strongest body in the world, you may struggle to complete a Tough Mudder course if your head isnโ€™t in the game. This is why it is equally important that you prepare yourself mentally for the challenge ahead.

It can be a good idea to study your chosen Tough Mudder course in more detail to see if there are any obstacles that you are particularly worried about. Also, if you find that you need a little motivation to compete, why not support a charitable cause such as Macmillan as this will give you more of an incentive to keep pushing forward?

Be consistent in your efforts

Ideally, you should start training for a Tough Mudder race as soon as possible, especially if you are not exactly in peak physical condition. However, if you donโ€™t have much time before your event, the most important thing to do is to be consistent in your training efforts.

As mentioned earlier, it takes stamina to complete a Tough Mudder race, so you need to get your body used to being pushed to its limits. Make sure you create a consistent training schedule, and, if you think you may struggle to stay on track, enlist the help of a workout buddy to help keep you motivated.

Get enough sleep

When you are training for an event that will test you both mentally and physically, you need to make sure you are getting sufficient rest. The daily recommended amount of sleep is between 7-8 hours for the average adult, but, when pushing your body and mind to the max, you may find that you need more than this.

The night before race day, try to relax in the evening and go to bed as early as possible. If you think you may struggle to drift off, run yourself a bubble bath and light some aromatherapy candles.
