The 90-Year-Old Cyclist | A Short Documentary

Another post of the francophones, although there are subtitles. A beautiful documentary about a very spritely chap. Originally from Italy, he has a wonderful accent which reflects the fact that he now lives in the south-west of France. I’m sure that even if you don’t understand his words, you’ll be able to appreciate the beauty of what he is saying. Very touching when he talks about his siblings, all of whom are still living. We can only hope that the rest of us are still on the bike when we are in our 90s…

Here are the words of the filmmaker, Florent Piovesan, the grandson of the man himself. Subscribe to his YouTube channel here.

10 years ago I made a short documentary about my grandfather who was 80 at the time and still cycling everyday. The video got a lot of attention and was even Staff Picked by Vimeo!

This was my first proper short documentary and of course it was made with limited gear, experience and budget. Fortunately my grandfather is still with us and very much cycling almost as often as before so I wanted to revisit this idea and create a new documentary for his 90th.

The plan was not to create a copy of the original one of course but to shoot this with a bigger crew and create a new documentary with a different angle and stronger visual style, which I think we achieved!

For this one I also wanted to include some of his brothers and friends and give the opportunity to them to express what they feel about my grandfather.

This is probably my most personal and important project to date due to how close I am to the subject but also since I was directing and not covering every single aspect of the project as I am more used to.

It was a great collaborative experience to be able to bring in talented and close friends like Alex and Clement which elevated the production value of this documentary and of course the final result.

This documentary would have not been possible without the amazing support from Artlist and Filmconvert, and would have not looked as good without the support of DZOFILM and Nanlite.

BTS and cinematography breakdown videos coming soon!

Shot on the BMPCC6K and 6K Pro in July 2023, in the South West of France.

(Earphones recommended)

Let me know if you have any questions :).

Cheers,

Flo
