I’m sure it will bite back soon but in this spring-like weather, can there be a better alternative to getting out on the bike? I doubt it… Today’s ride took me along the Calder Valley to Hebden Bridge…
…over Oxenhope Moor in the direction of Haworth and then Keighley…
…before a final stretch along the Leeds-Liverpool Canal via Saltaire to the centre of Bradford, a train to Halifax and a final 5 miles to home. 40 miles all in. My cycling year has started!
Some interesting, high-quality cycling infrastructure is being built to the north of Bradford. Let’s hope they don’t stop when the soon-to-be-completed cycle path in the direction of Saltaire is finished.

That Oxenhope Moor road is a beneficiary of TdF tarmac, I think – used to be, and on OS maps still shown as, unsealed, but was decent top when I did it last year. I’ve just been round Ingleton, where all the scenic, must-cycle back roads seem freshly, smoothly surfaced. It’s the main roads (notably the A65) that are holed and bumpy!
I have always thought that one of the main reasons why so many French roads are in very good condition is that the local authorities invest money in them prior to the arrival of the Tour de France. It also helps, obviously, to have governments who understand that investment in the transport infrastructure is a good thing…
Yes it takes some beating
44 miles round South Lakeland today in glorious sunshine. Took my flask and sandwiches and enjoyed the views. It’s bound to change, but nothing can take away what we’ve had.
