La Plaza De España, Seville

I’ve seen pictures of this before but on my two previous visits to Seville never got to see it. Not quite sure why as it’s in the city centre…

It’s an extraordinary building but not as old as you might think. Built in the 1920s for an international fair it’s a riot of painted tiles and has, in the last twenty years, been restored. It has a few tiles missing (show me a bathroom or kitchen that was tiled shortly after the end of the First World War that doesn’t!) but the effect is spectacular. Each province of Spain has its own ‘seat’ with various emblems, luminaries and scenes depicted for each of them. If you like symmetrical buildings, you’ll love the Plaza de España!
