Christmas Must Be Approaching…

…because it is now snowing on WordPress! Apologies to the software designers for slightly exaggerating the effect. A temporary change of background to a festive blue until the season of joy comes to and end with the snow in January. :)

1, 2, 3,… 99,999

Rioting is clearly not a good thing. Neither is the Iranian government (although I would imagine that the vast majority of the population are very nice people indeed – when did they last riot for no good reason?). Forbury Gardens in Reading are nice, but not that well-known and certainly never ‘trend’ on Twitter. Why is all this relevant? Well, my viewing figures have been higher than normal this week; they already stand at nearly one thousand hits for the first three days of the week which in turn has brought me my 100,000th visitor a little sooner than expected. I’m just trying to work out which of the topics discussed this week at apsykes.com have attracted the influx of visitors. I think it must be the Iranians. Mention of them and their Ministry of Foreign Affairs no doubt triggered some switches at MI6 which in turn must have got the intelligence community flocking here only for them to to discover that most of the time I write about cycling… (Incidentally, I’ve just noticed this page on the Foreign Ministry website which links with what I was saying about the Iranians yesterday; it makes a short but interesting read).

Anyway, to these visitors, and the many more who have passed this way over the last 20 months, I say a big thank-you as the counter has now ticked past 100,000 page hits. I shouldn’t forget the 7,500 who kind-of came this way when the blog was hosted by Blogger in the first 16 months of its existence but it was only when I came to WordPress that the blog started to develop a distinct identity and pull in the crowds. Long may it continue.

Incidentally, for all you cynics out there who are thinking that a good number of those 100,000 are me, then think again. I always make sure that I log in before I enter the site and as WordPress puts it in their familiar, friendly style at the bottom of the ‘stats’ page “…Keep in mind we don’t count your own visits.”

Matters On My Mind

By the man who is currently rowing the Canadian Arctic

As mentioned yesterday I have started reading Mark Beaumont’s new book about how he cycled from Alaska to the southern tip of Argentina in 2009/10 while at the same time scaling the highest mountains in North & South America. Well, not quite at the same time but I’m sure you know what I mean. I’ve only got to the end of chapter two but – he is about to summit Mount McKinley – and I already want to set off on my next small-time adventure. There are reasons I have to wait until 2013 to cycle from Athens to Cadiz along the Eurovelo 8 (the Olympics, saving the money, becoming very fit, working out how to get two and a half months off work etc…), but if I could, I would set off tomorrow!

By the man who is currently looking for a better title for his book

Reading someone else’s book also makes me eager to finish my own. The chances are it won’t make it to the physical shelves of a bookshop but at least we now have the electronic world into which I can launch my little tome (if that is not a contradiction in terms) and it should find its place someday on the virtual shelves of Kindle. If the first week of my summer holidays was spent renovating the flat and the second entertaining (they may not use that word) my parents, the third must be dedicated to knocking my first draft into shape. That would be something to celebrate!

Morecambe and Wise present Des O'Connor with a golden disc to mark sales of 100,000 for his album 'Just For You'

As will my 100,000 visitor since this blog arrived on WordPress in January 2010. Each week approximately 1,500 of you pass this way (although I admit some of you may come more than just the once; if we lived in a just world, you would all receive medals for your diligence), so as things stand, with the visitor count currently standing at 98,945, barring a sudden upsurge in activity (which I am not against!), the 100,000 barrier should be breached on Thursday or Friday. Perhaps I should offer a prize to the person who can email me a screen shot of the counter standing at 100,000. It could be you!

On The Subject Of Dragons’ Den…

…the woman who had the idea of selling toys through the Internet was very proud of the fact that her website had ‘over 5,000 visitors’ per month. So do I! July 2011 has been the third most popular month since January 2010 (the peak by the way is August 2010 when I cycled to southern Italy along the Eurovelo 5). The Dragons were sufficiently impressed to give her £60,000 for 25% of her company. Perhaps I should think more about what I said in the previous post.

Up One At Number 14…

I think last time I mentioned this I was at number 15. I wonder why I don’t have a ‘proper’ title like the other blogs mentioned? Perhaps it’s in the WordPress settings somewhere. That said, does this blog have a name? Perhaps it should… I’m still not that happy with the title of the book. Thinking cap on.

Fifty Thousand!

At some point today, the counter over there on the right will tick over to 50,000 hits on this website (plus the 7,500 when it used to be hosted by Blogger). It could be you! That’s 50,000 in about 10 months! Here are some fascinating (!) facts about those 50,000 visitors (OK, I know that many of them will be the same people returning to the site more than once but don’t ruin my moment of glory);

There have been 842 posts, 760 comments in 6 categories with 216 tags

This was busiest day was the day (731 hits)

This has been the top “referrer” (1,109 referrals)

This has been the top “search engine term” (1,014 searches)

This has been the top page apart from the homepage (4,320 hits)

This has, bizarrely, been the top post (717 hits)

This has been the top “click” (1,310 clicks)

This has been the top picture (272 views)

And here is what you get if you type “50,000″ into Google image search (I couldn’t choose!);

Peaking

WordPress have revamped the way in which they show the statistics of people visiting the blogs they host, such as www.apsykes.com ! Here is the bar chart that shows the number of visitors per week since March 2010. I love how the chart peaks on week 31; that was the week when I cycled to the top of the St. Gotthard Pass. A few re-Tweets by @mrmarkbeaumont helped as well!

I now need to write something interesting to get my statistics going back uphill again. Or do something interesting and write abou it. Today I will struggle as I am 1. doing some paperwork for school, 2. meeting some friends for coffee at lunchtime, 3. doing more paperwork for school, 4. watching Strictly Come Dancing & the X Factor with a friend. 2 & 4 are nice but probably not worth blogging about! If 1 & 2 are productive, perhaps Sunday may be a promising blogging-firendly day. :)

Twenty Thousand and Counting…

At some point this morning, the counter over there on the right (just below the email subscription that you keep meaning to fill in so that you receive an email every time I update the blog :) ) will tick over to 20,000. That’s the number of visitors in the six months since I moved over to WordPress from Blogger (where I had registered another 7,500 since August 2008). To everyone who has taken the time to read something that I have written on here, a very big thank-you! And an especially big thank-you to the dozens of you who have taken the time to comment and email with your advice and guidance; every single word is very much appreciated and much of what you have contributed has found itself to this front page. It’s a true collaborative affair! Keep it coming….

Pressure to Perform

This is purely a self-imposed pressure. No advertisers to keep happy or critics to placate. But, as my subtitle tells you, this is a journey by blog and bike and I do keep a keen eye on my WordPress stats page which a fascinating mine of mathematical facts and figures about www.eurovelo5.com . The graph above for example shows the number of visits to this home page. Am I loosing my mojo? Look at the decline over the last week or so (it looks worse by today’s figure which, at 8am shows the few people who have come to this site today – 9 so far.) More worrying is the graph below which shows the number of visitors to the website (not just the homepage) by week. From a peak over 1,400 weekly visitors in April it has come down to around 750 this week (assuming a few more people come to the site today; the new week starts tomorrow). It’s interesting to reflect that when I write something worth reading, I get more visitors, when I am more prosaic, I am ignored. There’s a lesson in life. And I think that banging on about the statistics of a website falls into the latter category, not the former… Shut up Andrew and think of something interesting to say!
